Independent dental hygiene practice is one of the most empowering opportunities in our profession. It offers autonomy, flexibility, the ability to serve your community in new ways, and the chance to build something that truly reflects your values. Many hygienists feel the spark of wanting something more. They imagine a practice that feels calm, welcoming, and aligned with the type of care they want to provide. They imagine designing systems that work, serving clients the way they know is right, and experiencing pride in building something of their own.

But wanting independence and being ready for it are two different things. Starting an independent practice requires confidence, clarity, planning, and a realistic understanding of what ownership looks like day to day. This blog is designed as a self-assessment that helps you reflect honestly on whether you are prepared to take the next steps toward owning an independent dental hygiene practice.

You do not need to have everything figured out. You do not need a business degree. You do not need to know every regulatory detail today. You only need awareness, willingness to learn, and the drive to take consistent steps. Use this self-assessment to explore where you stand.

1. Your Motivation: Why Do You Want Independent Practice?

Your reason is the foundation of everything. A strong “why” helps you stay focused during slow seasons, paperwork days, and moments when self-doubt appears. Many hygienists choose independence because they want more time with clients, a calmer clinic environment, flexible scheduling, or a practice they can shape around their values.

Ask yourself:

- What specific experiences in traditional practice made me think about independence?

- What do I want my independent practice to feel like for clients and for myself?

- How important is autonomy in my life and career?

- Am I looking for increased freedom, improved balance, or a new challenge?

A clear reason allows you to make decisions based on intention rather than pressure. Owners who know their motivation are more likely to build practices that feel sustainable long term.

2. Your Comfort With Decision Making

Independent practice means you will make decisions every day. Choices about charting systems, sterilization equipment, marketing, scheduling, fees, and policies all become part of your role. You do not need to love every detail, but you should be willing to make choices confidently and adjust when needed.

Consider:

- Do I make decisions easily, or do I avoid them?

- When I am unsure, do I seek information and move forward?

- Can I handle the idea that some decisions will not be perfect the first time?

Successful independent hygienists understand that decision making is part of the journey. Every decision teaches you something.

3. Your Relationship With Learning New Things

Independence requires a willingness to learn continuously. You will learn regulatory requirements, business systems, client communication strategies, and technology. None of this is overwhelming when approached step by step, but the desire to learn is essential.

Reflect on:

- How do I respond when I need to learn something new?

- Do I enjoy problem solving?

- Am I comfortable reaching out for support or guidance when needed?

Your ability to learn, adapt, and stay curious is one of the strongest predictors of long-term success.

4. Your Financial Readiness

You do not need to be wealthy to start an independent practice. Many hygienists begin with small budgets, mobile equipment, or part-time transitions. What matters most is understanding:

- The startup costs

- The ongoing monthly costs

- The realistic income expectations for the first six to twelve months

Ask yourself:

- Do I know what model I want to start with (mobile, in-clinic, or hybrid)?

- Do I understand the general costs associated with my chosen model?

- Am I prepared for a gradual ramp-up of clients?

5. Your Approach to Regulation and Compliance

Independent hygienists operate under a clear regulatory framework. Understanding your responsibilities is important, but it does not need to be stressful. Compliance is manageable when broken into steps.

Consider:

- Am I willing to learn the standards and guidelines that apply to independent practice?

- Do I feel comfortable building policies, procedures, and documentation?

- Am I prepared to set up a practice that meets inspection requirements?

6. Your Support System

Independence does not mean doing everything alone. In fact, the most successful RDH owners are the ones who connect with mentors, colleagues, service providers, and supportive people in their lives.

Think about:

- Who can support me emotionally as I build my practice?

- Who can I reach out to for business questions?

- Do I have mentors or professional contacts who understand independent practice?

7. Your Capacity for Uncertainty and Growth

Every business, even well-planned ones, includes moments of uncertainty. The first few months may be quieter before your systems and reputation build. This is a normal part of practice growth and not a sign of failure.

Ask yourself:

- Can I manage temporary uncertainty while staying committed to my goals?

- Am I willing to make adjustments as I learn what works?

- Do I trust myself to grow through the process?

8. Your Vision for the Future

Independent practice is not just a job. It is a vision for your future. You get to design a business that aligns with your values, your preferred schedule, your income goals, and your desired work environment.

Reflect on:

- What do I want my practice to look like in one year?

- What about five years?

- Do I imagine expanding, offering mobile services, team members, or specializing?

If you connected with many of the prompts in this self-assessment, you may be ready to explore independent practice more seriously. If some areas feel uncertain, that is completely normal. Independence is a process, not a switch.
